Day 9 Rothenburg, Germany Aug. 6, 2010

Glimpse medieval life in authentic Rothen- burg. Turn back time and walk streets that have not changed in 600 years.

Buy souvenirs in the best and cheapest little town in Germany.

Our hotel
is right by one of the old gates in the town wall. The building is 500 years old, but the rooms are cute and modern.

Rothenburg was rich from wool and trade in the medieval time period. They built sturdy big houses which still stand today. Then came several royal visits, the plague, and a war that stripped the town of everything it had.

Plunging into poverty meant that no one in town had the money to remodel or update anything. For hundreds of years the town stayed as it was. When tourism became fashionable in the late 19th century, Rothenburg was discovered and started to wake up from its' long sleep. Repairs were made, but nothing was changed. Today you see the dolled- up version of the 14th century.

One of the best reasons to stay overnight is to take the Night Watchman's tour. He does it in English at 8:00 and German at 9:30 every night. He gives you all the most interesting history of the town in a theatrical accent wich a large dollop or irony and humor. The best!

Christmas is here all year round. Kathe Wohlfahrt and several other shops are a wonderful browse!
