Drive on tiny, winding one-lane roads, and hope the GPS really does know where you are!
That's how we got to Burg Eltz in Germany,
which has been inhabited by the same noble family clan for 800 years. It's private, secluded, and on very steep ground above the Mosel River.
After visiting Burg Eltz, we drove on to Bacharach on the Rhine, where we'd be for two nights. That's not our tour bus! We were still driving our own van. The old castle on the hill is now a youth hostel.
The picture you see at left is our bed and breakfast. The building is over 500 years old, and it's name is Im Malerwinkel, which means "Painter's Corner."
That evening we did a little walking tour of the town, ending up in the vineyards above it.
Dinner was in a cute little spot in town. The lady didn't look too happy. She was very kind, but she said that when she didn't come to work, nothing seemed to get done. Turns out she lost her husband the month before. What unknown lives are led by those around us . . .
Several of us are musical, so we've been seeking out local concerts. Tonight Bacharach had a harp concert in their old church. The group was from England, and the music was glorious!
