Four of us flew in from SLC and met the others at our hotel in the Marais. They had been touring the English countryside, and I think they were really happy to see me just as they climbed out of their taxi from the Chunnel station!
Drop your suitcases, and get out to see Paris!
We walked a few typically Parisian blocks from our hotel to Notre Dame Cathedral.
It's hard to comprehend that people could build something that's still standing after 700 years! It was one of the first to use flying buttresses to support the walls. They don't really fly, they are just arched so you can walk beneath. This works because they found that the outer edge of the buttress carries the stress.
With our Paris Museum Passes, we could get into most things without paying extra, so we dropped into the crypts under the square.
We found the zero-zero marker for all of France in front of the Cathedral. From this bronze marker they measure everything in France.
Here's a sure-fire cure for jet lag: When you get to Paris, stay up until normal bedtime, keeping yourself awake by visiting the Eiffel Tower at night. Take the elevators to the top, view the whole city alight below you, and be a participant in Paris!
