Day 6 Verdun & WWI Battlefields Aug. 3, 2010

One of our group is a history buff, which led us to Verdun and some very interesting places we might not have seen.

We found battlefields that had taken thousands of shells, where you can still see the craters. The French have planted trees to cover the scars.

A number of monuments mark significant spots. Here you see some of the thousands of bicyclists who were having a rally in that area.

It also brought us to the absolute best place we stayed for the whole trip!

Called Chateau de Jaulny, it was so far out in the French toolies, even our trusty GPS could not find it! I had to ask directions 4 times.

It's an old castle, parts of it dating to the 11th century. You see the dining room, where we had breakfast.

The owner suggested that for our supper, she would lay out dishes for a picnic, and we could bring our own food.
What a wonderful evening we had, sharing food and exploring the grounds!

The next morning we found some American cemeteries, where the feeling was very quiet and noble.
